WE COLLABORATED WITH THE BALEARIC GOVERNMENT TO IMPROVE DRUG POLICIES

This week we signed a collaboration agreement with the Health Service of the Balearic Islands to implement public policies on transparency and impartiality in the rendering of health activities. This is the first agreement of its type that It’s not Healthy reaches with a public institution.

In Spain, the pharmaceutical debt is one of the main bottleneck issues for the autonomous communities. The spending on drugs in hospitals  has been growing steadily over the past decade, consuming some of the investment that should go towards other health necessities. In the Balearic Islands, public spending on pharmacy and sanitary products has increase by 21.4% between 2014 and 2017, according to the data from the Association for the Defense of Public Health of the Balearic Islands, an entity that subscribes to the It’s not Healthy manifesto.

Therefore, the organizations that are part of the campaign hope that the signing of this agreement will be an important step towards attaining a more transparent and efficient model. In order to follow up on these commitments, a mixed commission will be established and will be composed of professionals from the Administration and representatives from It’s not Healthy.

The signing of the agreement, which took place yesterday in Menorca, coincided with the round table “Initiative It’s not Healthy: for equitable and healthy access to medicines,” where we analyzed issues with the current R&D drug model, as well as the existing proposals to introduce more transparency and reform the system.
